In 1995, the South African Department of Education, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Welfare, began to develop the National Policy on HIV and AIDS Education (Visser 2005, page 206). Different sex related curricula currently being implemented by South African schools and institutions focus largely on HIV and AIDS awareness and information.

However, the mental and psychological perspectives, like gender equality, the gender role and mental health of adolescents, are being neglected. Besides, the training of the teachers are also being questioned.
