The UK

Sex education in the UK is partly compulsory since 11 years old. The compulsory part is implanted into science curriculum while the other part is optional which parents can drop students out. The full name of the programme - Sex and relationship education (SRE), includes reproduction, sexuality and sexual health. The curriculum was reviewed in 2013. Unfortunately, a survey shows that 40% of young people between the ages of 11 and 18 thought that their SRE was poor due to a lack of personal relationship topics, time of lessons and timetable.

Regarding sex education in mass media, in September 2008, the Channel 4 broadcasted the ‘Sex Education Show’. This show reaches an unprecedented level of educating the public about sexual behaviour, venereal disease and the need of sexual desire . It even shows the close-up of reproductive organ without pixelization. The 4 Seasons Series receive a great myriad of criticism from the society since it is too ‘wild’ when everyone can get access to it. Miss Fu, the Deputy of the Society for Truth and Light, claims that it shapes people into ‘bisexual’. For more detailed explanation, please click

Netherland

The Netherlands is an exemplar of sex education in the world. Its adolescent pregnancy rates is the lowest in the world, which you may think is impossible in Western Countries. Their form of ‘comprehensive sex education’ begins as early as kindergarten.

By law, sex edcuation becomes mandatory from primary school. Apart from the basic knowledge, what makes Netherland special is their principle: learning about sex is normal and inevitable, so trustworthy information should be revealed to them.It is worthwhile to note that they are not only teaching sex, but also ‘sexuality’.

At age 11, their curriculum includes how to deal with love relationship.

You may find that the teacher is educating students the difference between favourable impression and love. Furthermore, the teacher is ‘warning’ them not to send break-up message which cannot be found in curriculum of other countries. The topics regarding  masturbation , sexual satisfication and LGBT are commonly taught in Dutch at higher age. More European countries are now following their footsteps.
