Before the reform and opening up (1978), China was straightly prohibited any sex education due the policy on planned economy. In 1981, The Ministry of Education announced that sex education would established in all middle schools throughout the country. But until now, Chinese schools still teach only basic anatomy.

 

 

 

China

There are two main reasons:

 

1. Many parents refuse that their children be taught condom use, hoping that they may never engage in pre-marital sexual activities

 

2. Chinese people are very emphasize on education. However, sex is not a subject tested in the all-important university entrance exam and teachers have little incentive to educate on this subject.

Japan

Sex education system is quite open in Japan when compare with other countries in Asia. Due to low birth rate, Japan really emphasize on sex education. They teach concrete idea of sex organs, contraception method and knowledge of prevention against sexually transmitted infections (STI) starting from primary school. The Japanese children are mature in a very young age in term of sexuality issue.

 

But in recent years, more and more conservatives require the sex education should be more indistinct or even retreat. There are two important factors which urge this decision:

 

1.     The children know more and freer with sex, but they have a higher chance to deal with sexuality issues and thus vulnerable to sex-related problems.

 

2.      The current teaching methods are too sensitive and prompt children into early sexual activity.

Korea

Korea pays a great effect to promote sex education. The sex education lectures are mandatory of all the primary and secondary schools. However, the sex education solely focus on physical development and gender role. There are some controversial contents that being criticize by the public and education experts.

 

The content of the sex education:

1.      Fail to foster awareness of gender equality.

2.      Encourages and reinforce prejudices and stereotypes of gender role by giving wrong guideline.

3.      Exclude any mention of homosexuality or sexual minorities.

4.      Show an intolerant view toward the sexuality go against the country’s traditional values and social norm.

Russia

Russian students currently don't receive any form of sex education in schools. The sex education development in school have never been started in Russia. Russian preferred the method of sex education involves reading fiction. Children can only receive education from their parent or study by themselves.

 

The major reason is the prohibition of top government officers (especially the President of Children's Rights Commissioner of Russian Federation- Pavel Astakhov). They thought introducing sex in classroom would go against the country’s morals and traditions.

India

People in India are free to have sex with opposite sex even before adulthood, however discussion on sex related topic is a taboo topic in Indian culture. According to their culture, sex is an adult topic and they should learn it after marriage. Most parents not even teach their children sex issue, not to mention as the general education in school. Even they have the related topic, they would offer lessons in abstinence.

There are some values of sexuality that India through that hinder the sex education development:

1.      Indian culture is more important than everything. It is the only moral guideline on sexuality.

2.      Teaching children about sex will only cause them to have more sex.

3.      Teaching about homosexuality will make child a homosexual. This is morally wrong and against nature.
